This year’s fire season has sadly taken a turn for the worse. The fire that continues to burn in Northeast Attica reached the urban area.
From its’ onset, the Desmos team has been in constant communication with local authorities and organizations on the field, tracking and updating the ever-changing needs, and responding swiftly to meet them. Thanks to Desmos’ Support Prorgram for Volunteer Firefighter Teams, we have direct communication with most of the volunteer firefighter teams operating in Attica.
Within the first 48 hours, thanks to funds previously raised for the Desmos Emergency Fund, designated for immediate use in times of crisis, we supplied 10 volunteer wildfire firefighting teams with fire masks and firefighting equipment worth €25,000. We also provided volunteer animal rescue teams with special high-protection masks as well as food for both the firefighters and volunteers.
However, the requests far exceed our resources. The needs include firefighting equipment and personal protective gear, high-protection masks for citizens and volunteers, support for evacuation centers, fuel for volunteer transportation, assistance to animal rescue groups, and much more.
As always in times of crisis, we strive to gather as much reliable information as possible and to identify immediate ways to help. We know that in the coming hours and days, more needs will arise, and unfortunately, we cannot rule out further fires due to the ongoing heat, drought, and dry conditions.
It is crucial to be prepared and have the resources to act swiftly and effectively when the need arises. The trust shown by Desmos’ donors enables us to respond with flexibility, speed, and efficiency.
Our goal is to always have funds readily available so that we can act immediately in times of crisis.
