On November 15, 2017, flash floods in western Attica caused by heavy overnight rain unfortunately resulted in the death of 24 people, the injury of many more, and extensive public and private property damages. In the aftermath of this sudden violent phenomenon the nation woke up shocked, but quickly thousands of people reached out via multiple channels to help the afflicted area any way they could.

We were once more at the forefronts of this crisis, with our goal being to make sure that the aid provided by individuals and companies reached those in need as soon as possible and remained by their side as they rebuilt their lives. With multiple on-site visits at Western Attica and Mandra we were able to evaluate needs and aid provisions first-hand, but also meet with municipality officials and charitable organizations in person for an in depth understanding of the situation. Being in constant communication with local agents, we were able to regularly update interested donors about what was really needed at every moment, and efficiently concentrate and redistribute resources.

The aid distribution to Mandra unfolded during 5 separate site visits. Thanks to the overwhelming support by individuals, schools, universities, other charitable organizations, volunteer groups and companies, we were able to donate essential goods for emergency relief such as food, water, diapers, baby products, cleaning supplies, rain boots etc, but also to identify and research other uncommon or long-term needs:  Thanks to the donation of the construction company CCC we were able to address the immediate needs of the Mandra residents in wearables and at the same time MyShoe provided us with brand new rainboots for the residents that were involved in the cleaning operations. A couples’ donation helped us purchase equipment necessary, such as carpets and electric vacuums, for the 1st and 5th Mandra kindergartens and Frigoglass donated 4 fridges for the two kindergartens, the social pharmacy and the elderly centre. Thenamaris shipping company prepared complete aid packets of cleaning supplies to be delivered by the municipality in the most affected households. 

More than 6 months after the tragic floods of November, the residents of the affected areas have yet to recover and the 5th kindergarten still operates in the theatre area of the 5th elementary school, as the kindergarten buidling remains closed. Thrpugh the support of our donors, we were able to provide valuable assistance and relief to the municipality of Mandra and the estimated 700 affected families.
